Of copies and inspirations

Hi All,
Numerous sites post about music copied/inspired from English/other
language songs by all MD's including RD. Though all tunes used by RD
can be classified as classic inspirations with RD adding his magical
touch, the one song which always puzzles me is Aaj To Gair Sahi from
Oonche Log, this song has been simply lifted from the original gazal
by Gulam Ali or Mehendi Hasan (not sure who) and been given to
Kishore. Is the music of that song credited to the lord? if it is
was he under some kind of pressure by the producers to just use this
song as it is?

Thanks,
Parijat

Hi all,

Not only "Aaj tu gair sahi" but you can add "main aur
meri awaragi" by Ghulaam Ali in the movie Duniya and
"Ye dil ye pagal dil mera" by same singer in the movie
"Maati mangey khoon" are also the classic inspiration
by RD.Note the "ye dil yeh pagal.." sung by Ghulaam
Ali in the movie. But I don't think this as direct lift
either if we see in the point of view folk songs can
be a inspiration then why not a ghazals.

Three points to note:

1. Is Pancham's "Aaj Tu Gair Sahi" an exact copy of Mehdi Hassan's
version? Can anybody upload the two numbers for us to compare?

2. Has Ghulam Ali also sung "Main Aur Meri Awargi"? I mean, this was
written by Javed Akhtar for the film Duniya and Pancham composed a
divine tune for the song. And it was taken to heavenly heights by
Kishore Kumar. This was in 1984. Did Ghulam Ali's version appear
before or after this one. Remember that the maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan did a "Main Aur Meri Awargi" and IMHO that was a big letdown.
The soul of the song was missing, and Pancham-Kishore's version is
miles ahead.

3. The Ghulam Ali classic "Yeh Dil Yeh Pagal Dil" was probably used
in Maati Mangey Khoon in the manner that Ravi used the same
singer's "Chupke Chupke" in Nikaah. "Yeh Dil Yeh Pagal" was penned by
Mohsin Naqvi and composed by Ghulam Ali himself, if I am not
mistaken. Panchm could have arranged the music for this number when
Raj Khosla decided to use it in his film. Please can anybody confirm
whether this was indeed the case.

Even if he did use Ghulam/Mehdi numbers I think he was doing them a favour. Overseas musicians get undue attention and local talent gets ignored. Pancham attempted to inject a healthy dose of ghazal into bollywood so it did not really hurt. Why does the discussion veer towards copied music ? Pancham composed many tunes with poetic flavour like "Khwaab ki tasveer ankhen" (Gomti Ke Kinare) or "Hum Kitne Nadaan The" (Situmgar), Humne Sanam Ko khat likha (Shakti) which never get written about.

Hold on to those horses....Phirte Hain Kab Se Dar-b-dar is not
Ghulam Ali. Its Javed's poetry...in fact if you listen to his poetic
recitation - Pancham has simply converted it into a beautiful song.
Javed's recitation gives a flavor but is narrated as a typical
shayar's shaayari.

And I cannot for some reason imagine Ghulam Ali accomodating all
that guitar. Nothing wrong with Mr. Ali - but I find him restricted
to the peti (aka harmonium) only. Which is why when they decided to
use his ghazal in MAATI MAANGEY KHOON, Pancham re-recorded it as a
song - as opposed to a narration of a ghazal. The typical filmi
music touch made it more suitable for picturisation as a backdrop
for dramatic events in the movie. Something that the original
rendition would not accomodate.

And judging from Pancham's comments on his difficulty to make Ghulam
Ali sing in a typical filmi recording setting - I don't think
Pancham was keenly looking forward to converting more ghazals.
