Discussion:
2 songs of Geeta in Raaz

While discussing this on a different group, wanted to share here too :

One of them was a duet with Geeta & Hemant ( a very good quality photo of
which, is uploaded by me for you and other fans, here :
http://picasaweb.google.com/kcpingle/Mypics#5295573489417792562 ) and the
other was a trio with Geeta, Asha & Shamshad.
The title of the second song was "Sooni Hai Sajariya". Shailendra and Jaidev
were there for the recording and they said that ""RDB had captured the
atmosphere so well. They were reminded of the famous Chandni Chowk of
Lucknow, the home of dance and play.

RDB says in an interview in 1970-71 in "Madhuri" ( I have that interview )
that out of the 2 songs, he used one of the tunes in Chhote Nawab and the
second one he still has it ( written by Shailendra ) and he will use it for
a movie, which deserves that tune.

Then we have Raju Bharatan, who said that RDB composed one song for Raaz ,
based on the Theme of Limelight, only because Guru Dutt wanted him to do so.
RDB was ridiculed by the colleagues ( musicians ? ) when he was got caught.
The second song, however was essentially an original tune by RDB. ( I have
got this RB interview somewhere )

Also many claim that "this Limelight" is nothing but the beauty, re-used in
Bombay To Goa - Tum Meri Zindagi Mein

So my conclusion is the following :
1) Sooni Hai Sajariya, finally made it into Chhote Nawab - but in Lata's
voice.
2) The Geeta-Hemant duet was then sung by Kishore-Lata ( lyrics changed and
written by RK )

Dear All,

Post the message by Kaustubh about the 2 songs of Raaz, it makes me wonder as to why Pancham never really work with Hemant Kumar after making his debut except for 2 songs in 1978 from Chor ho to aisa and Heeralal pannalal?

Though in 1970s, he sang very few hindi numbers, Hemantda was quite active in the 60s with songs for other MDs like OP Nayyar, Kishore Kumar and Salilda. As far as Bengali cinema is concerned, he was quite active and even took to direction I think...infact a few days before his death in 1989, he had also performed.

Bottomline, he was active when Pancham was around and had a good relationship with Sachinda...then why did Pancham and Hemantda never come together?

cheers,
Gaurav

Hi,

Hemant Kumar did work with RD in Oonche Log in the song "Aaja Mere Pyar Aaaja". Remember?

These collaborations were limited due to perhaps the fact that Hemant Kumar's time was in the 50s and 60s....and would not suit many newer actors.

Even in the aforementioned song, I personally did not like his rendition. It seemed like he was exertiong himself to sing this one. The tun, however, is superb.

Gaurav,

Quite an interesting poser. Actually I'd apply that even to Geeta
Dutt. How come Pancham never worked with both of them after the
shelved debut attempt.

But to my knowledge Pancham had a long wait to begin his career as
an independant composer. There is quite a few years between Raaz and
Chote Nawab.

Even his earlier assignments were mostly hits and misses - till
Teesri Manzil. By hit-and-miss I mean, not many went into formal
production - except for the Mehmood movies - Chote Nawab, Bhoot
Bungla, Pati Patni and Chandan Ka Palna.

I am not sure if it was a Mehmood choice on the singers - that ruled
out Hemant Kumar and Geeta Dutt.

Additionally, Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha, Lata were still the popular
choices - even in the SDB camp. Hemant Kumar and Geeta Dutt had
almost become the speciality singers.

I think by the time Pancham had established himself as an
independant composer, Hemant Kumar and Geeta Dutt had faded away
from mainstream Hindi cinema songs.

Hence we find Pancham bringing back Hemant Kumar for a brief stint
in the 70s for Heeralal Pannalal and Chor Ho To Aisa.

In fact the engagement is supposed to have happened on one of Hemant
Kumar's rare visit to Mumbai. Quite a few composers including
Pancham had grabbed the opportunity to have him playback their
compositions.

Of course the best Pancham could provide was the Premnath and Pran
playback.

One thing - for some strange reasons, the Chor Ho To Aisa number
reminds me so much of the 'Shivji' number from Munimji. Did Pancham
have that song in the back of his head when he composed the
Mahashivratri number for Chor Ho To Aisa?

The Heeralal Pannalal number seems tailor-made for Hemant Kumar -
considering his vocal style, age, etc.

One more thing, I think Pancham also missed out Mukesh entirely in
his peak - and discovered Mukesh when he was struggling against the
KK popularity, Rafi resurgence in the 70s.

Perhaps Pancham had the penchant to swim against the tide :)

There are quite a few years not just between Raaz & Chhote Nawab, may be 3 but also,Chhote Nawab & Bhoot Bangla,4 years,to be precise! And even after that there were just 2 movies ayear. One thing which has always baffled me is that, even after 'Teesri Manzil' his career didn't exactly pick up.It was only after 'Kati Patang'& 'HRHK that it really picked up.

Shashi, your analysis makes sense to me...to add to it probably also the fact that Manna Da and Rafi Sahab had become the specialty singers for Pancham...unless demanded for, by the film-makers...and it is also maybe a matter of rapport.

was quite active and even took to direction I think...infact a few
days before his death in 1989, he had also performed.

Bottomline, he was active when Pancham was around and had a good
relationship with Sachinda...then why did Pancham and Hemantda never
come together?

One of them was a duet with Geeta & Hemant ( a very good quality photo of
http://picasaweb.google.com/kcpingle/Mypics#5295573489417792562 ) and the
other was a trio with Geeta, Asha & Shamshad.
The title of the second song was "Sooni Hai Sajariya". Shailendra and Jaidev
were there for the recording and they said that ""RDB had captured the
atmosphere so well. They were reminded of the famous Chandni Chowk of
Lucknow, the home of dance and play.
RDB says in an interview in 1970-71 in "Madhuri" ( I have that
interview )
Post by Kaustubh Pingle
that out of the 2 songs, he used one of the tunes in Chhote Nawab and the
second one he still has it ( written by Shailendra ) and he will use it for
a movie, which deserves that tune.
1) Sooni Hai Sajariya, finally made it into Chhote Nawab - but in Lata's
voice.
2) The Geeta-Hemant duet was then sung by Kishore-Lata ( lyrics changed and
written by RK )
