Thanks for the link, very interesting. I think Davjekar's daughter
sang a song for RD in YAAR MERI ZINDAGI.

For those interested, below is a 'free' translation of the original
article.

Ajay

The late Datta Davjekar, or "DD" as he was acronymically and fondly
called by lovers of Marathi music, was a well-known composer, who
composed many a humdinger in Marathi films, which are remembered to
this day. What is not widely known is "DD" created the first "Indian"
synthesizer more than three decades ago.

Kersi Lord, a senior and respected music arranger, has in his
collection the synthesizer "DD" made all those years ago. Mr Lord
becomes nostalgic when reminiscing about those days.

"In the 1970s Rahul Dev (RD) Burman was the most innovative music
director in Hindi Film industry. He loved and encouraged
experimentation. He had a formidable command over folk music. He was
also keen on using electronic instruments. The music he created found
favour with the masses. In those days we [RD and his team] were
forever we were forever looking for new electronic instruments to
play the tunes we had composed. Electronic instruments were not
easily available in the Indian markets at the time. The available
synthesizers used to be so gigantic they filled a whole room. I began
toying with the idea of making a `user-friendly' synthesizer. I could
think of only one man who I believed had sufficient knowledge of both
music and electronic instruments to bring this idea to fruition:
Datta Davjekar.

"I lived in Grant Road [an area in Mumbai] in those days, while "DD"
lived in Girgaom [a nearby area]. I met with "DD" and we made a list
of all the ingredients we'd need to make a synthesizer. "DD" bought
them from a nearby market and, in less than a week, he made the
synthesizer!

""DD" and I showed the synthesizer to "Pancham". RD was ecstatic when
he saw the it; he saluted "DD" when he learnt that "DD" had made the
instrument. I used this synthesizer for at least 300 songs".
